Located on the confluence of three rivers, the Ganga, the Yamuna and the Saraswathi, Prayagraj is a holy city of Uttar Pradesh, India. The city serves as the venue of the Maha Kumbh Mela that takes place once in 12 years. Astrologers calculate it as the holiest time to engage yourself in the ‘Holy Dip Programme'.

Sangam

The sacred spot of Sangam is the place where the most revered event of Hindus-the Kumbh Mela takes place. It lies about 7 km from the Civil Lines Township in the city. The term 'Sangam' is a Sanskrit word, which means Confluence. This is the place where tourists can witness the amalgamation of three of the holiest rivers in Hindu Mythological- Ganges, Yamuna, and Saraswati.

At the union, visitors can distinctly see the brownish water of the Ganges and the pellucid waters of the Yamuna merging into one. On the other hand, Saraswathi is believed to exist ethereally and is not visible to anyone. People consider bathing at the Sangam auspicious round the year and that too, for 15 days during ‘Magh Mela’ that takes place in Magh month ( mid-January to Mid-February).

Maha Kumbh Mela fascinates millions of devout Hindus who believe that taking a holy dip will cleanse their soul. A temporary township settles on the vacant land on the Prayagraj side of the river. Due to the union of the three rivers, the site is also referred as Triveni Sangam.

According to legends, a few drops of nectar ( A liquid that turns mortal to immortal) had fallen at the place. Since then, the city became the Tirthraja (The king of holy places). That is the reason why Kumbh Mela is organized in the city.

During Kumbh Mela, Sangam enriches a completely different look. All the luxuries of a comfortable life are eluded for the time by innumerable devotees. Be it young, old, troubled or blessed, all pay a visit to take a dip at this holy confluence for purifying their soul.

Performing this ritual of taking a dip is believed to have a stronger influence of body purification.
Besides the self-purification purposes, many people also pay a visit to the shores during this great religious event to offer pind for decreased parents.

The event brings an excellent opportunity for the foreigners who are frequently fascinated by Hindu culture and mythologies. Kumbh Mela enables them to witness the same at its best.
